Menindee lakes to receive inflow from Qld rains
15 FEBRUARY 2024Menindee lakes could receive more than 100 gigalitres (GL) of additional inflow in coming months, generated by rainfall across several Queenland river valleys in the northern basin, according to the latest WaterNSW modelling.
Menindee lakes currently sits at 58% of storage capacity, holding 1008GL of water in total, having already received approximately 90 GL of inflow this year.
Flow from at least five catchment rivers - including the Border Rivers network - is expected to reach the Barwon-Darling Baaka River upstream of the lakes, potentially delivering between 100-150 GL to the lakes by the end of March.
The Moonie system is expected to provide the majority of the inflow, with that water reaching the Barwon-Darling in January and expected to continue flowing through to early March.
Lesser volumes arriving from the Culgoa and Border Rivers' systems are expected to continue until the end of March and February respectively, with small contributions also expected from the Bokhara and Warrego Rivers, also through to March.
WaterNSW works closely with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to monitor weather forecasts and inflow projections.
