Secretary General’s lecture at Comenius University in Bratislava: “Summit in Reykjavik will be remembered as a turning point”

"There are good reasons to believe that our recent Summit in Reykjavik will be remembered as a turning point", highlighted Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić while addressing students, the diplomatic academy and a wider public at Comenius University in Bratislava.

In her lecture "Human Rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe: threats and opportunities", the Secretary General gave a comprehensive overview of the outcome of the Fourth Summit of the Heads of State and Government in Reykjavik (16-17 May), underlining the establishment of the Register of Damage caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

<_u13a_p> The Summit has been an historic opportunity to reaffirm the common commitment to the Council of Europe's core values.

"Leaders acknowledged the scale of the problem and committed to a crucial course correction. The agreement that they reached is wide-ranging, forward-looking, and ambitious for the people of our continent. Put into practice, it will ensure that human rights, democracy, and the rule of law are more deeply embedded in our societies", emphasised Marija Pejčinović Burić.

The broader challenge of reversing democratic backsliding in Europe, the human rights perspective on Artificial Intelligence regulations and the political right to a clean, sustainable, and healthy environment were also underscored.

"Member states will ensure that Reykjavik is remembered as the starting point for a democratic renewal in Europe. A clear, positive, and lasting response to the challenges we face now and in years to come. That legacy will be passed on to your generation. And those who come after you. I urge you to hold it close", stated Council of Europe Secretary General.
