Council Approves More New LED Illuminated City Street Signs

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled business meeting, Corpus Christi City Council approved the purchase of additional Internally Lighted Street Name (ILSN) signs. The funding for the $82,150 purchase is included in the FY 2022 Adopted Budget.

The Public Works Department is pursuing an initiative to improve the safety at all signalized intersections in the City. One method to meet this goal includes enhancing the nighttime visibility and illumination of street name signs.

"Improving night road safety with illuminated street-name signs increases visibility and readability at various distances and conditions, giving drivers more time to act at intersections," Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said. "These benefits are especially valuable at broad, high-volume intersections and in tourist areas with a significant number of visiting drivers," she added.

The City will remove or replace existing signs on an annual basis. After this initiative, a total of 131 out of 252 signalized intersections will be illuminated. The approval of this project will allow for a total of 59 additional LED signs to be installed at 15 signalized intersections. Twelve of the 15 intersections will receive Illuminated Street Name Signs for the first time.
