2024 WBL Scholastic Bowl results

More than 100 students from across the Western Buckeye League competed

Defiance and Shawnee took home top honors in the Western Buckeye League Scholastic Bowl Tournament held Thursday, May 2, 2024, at The Ohio State University at Lima. Defiance swept its matches to win the varsity competition with Shawnee as runner up. Shawnee JV won in head-to-head competition to beat Defiance in the junior varsity competition.

The varsity team from Defiance included Juan Drown, George English, Henry Hoffman and Jacob Schnitkey. The team finished with a 9-0 record. The varsity team from Shawnee included Evan Conley, Caiden Garlock and Andrew McKenzie. The team finished with an 8-1 record.

The winning JV team from Shawnee included Georgianna Damschroder, Ezra George and Tamduc Tran, and finished with a 7-1 record. The JV team from Defiance included Christopher Brinkman, Ashton English, Tristan Hamot, Jack Kost, Izaiah Ramos, Zephryn Starr and Aubre Wolford-Garcia. The team also finished with a 7-1 record.

The Defiance coach is James Kerr and the Shawnee coach is John Young.

The WBL Scholastic Bowl All Tournament Team was chosen by the coaches and made up of one member from each school. The 2024 All Tournament Team members are Jonah Volbert from Bath, Ethan Olwine from Celina, George English from Defiance, Maddox Bell from Elida, Jackson Blue from Kenton, Noah Brinkman from Ottawa-Glandorf, Andrew McKenzie from Shawnee, Owen Bubp from St. Marys, Jacob Kitson from Van Wert and Graham Shively from Wapakoneta. Jonah Volbert, Maddox Bell and Andrew McKenzie have been named to the All Tournament Team in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

High school teams from around western Ohio went head-to-head in the round-robin scholastic bowl tournament. Varsity and junior varsity teams from Bath (Daniel Grime), Celina (Chris Wood), Defiance (James Kerr), Elida (Melody Morris), Kenton (Todd Daquino), Ottawa-Glandorf (Joe Jahnz), Shawnee (John Young), St. Marys (Chad Doll), Van Wert (Chris Kraner) and Wapakoneta (Adam Friemering) competed. Coaches' names are in parentheses.

The competition is hosted and sponsored by The Ohio State University at Lima.
