Children's National Hospital supports pediatric services at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center

Children's National Hospital is providing Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center with physician coverage for most of its pediatric patients.

Children's National will provide 24/7 physician coverage at Shady Grove Medical Center for the Rockville, Md., hospital's neonatal intensive care and inpatient pediatric units, observation patients, newborn nursery and pediatric general surgery on-call. Children's National physicians will also provide telemedicine sub-specialist and inpatient consults.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with Shady Grove Medical Center, allowing us to reach even more children and families with the high-quality, compassionate care they deserve," said David Wessel, MD, executive vice president, chief medical officer and physician-in-chief at Children's National. "This collaboration strengthens our commitment to providing exceptional pediatric care and ensures that we can continue to meet the growing needs of our region."

"We are delighted that Children's National physicians are serving more of our hospital's young patients and their families," said Neil Roy, MD, chief medical officer of Shady Grove Medical Center. "Our collaboration allows the neonatal and pediatric programs at Shady Grove to serve more residents who need skilled, family-focused care close to home."

Transport services at Shady Grove Medical Center began on Feb. 1, with neurology and cardiology services also starting that day. Neonatology, hospitalist and telemedicine services will begin in early summer, and surgery services will start in the fall.

The neonatology program at Children's National ranks best in the Mid-Atlantic and top in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for the past eight years in a row, consistently placing the program on the "Honor Roll" list for its exceptional specialized newborn care. Similarly, the pediatric hospital has received Telehealth Accreditation from URAC for its commitment to promoting quality virtual health services for patients and families.

Shady Grove Medical Center serves more than 5,000 children a year in its newborn programs and is home to the largest pediatric emergency room in Montgomery County. In 2024, its neonatal intensive care unit earned Maryland's highest patient safety award for a program to expand access to feeding choices for families of newborns.
