UHV hosts Goliad second-graders for day of STEM activities

Aleksandr Pikalov, left, University of Houston-Victoria chemistry assistant professor, puts a drop of two different solutions in the hands of two Goliad Elementary School second-grade students Tuesday for a demonstration on how chemical reactions can create color changes as part of a field trip activity. The UHV College of Natural & Applied Science hosted 85 second-grade students from Goliad Tuesday as part of a field trip that included five different activities led by UHV faculty members that showcased the different uses of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students took part in activities including "Color Change Reactions in Chemistry" by Pikalov; "Aquatic Invertebrates" by Dmitri Sobolev, interim provost of the college; 'Mathemagics: A Magical Journey through Basic Math' by Ricardo Teixeira, associate professor of mathematics; 'Hands-On Robotics with Arduino' by Mai Abo Shakra, lecturer in computer science; and 'Artificial Intelligence Using a Teachable Machine' by Asahi Tomitaka, assistant professor of computer science.
