For graduating senior Kennedy Kreger, law was not always the most obvious or easiest career path. But thanks to the support and counsel of the close-knit political science and pre-law community at Saginaw Valley State University, Kennedy has no reservations about heading to law school.

While attending Harper Creek High School, Kennedy never dreamed of being a lawyer or studying political science.

"Had you asked me in high school I would have told you that I wanted to be a radiologist. However, when I realized how many science classes I would have to take, I knew that was not the path for me. I then looked into the legal field and became very intrigued."

Although Kennedy settled on political science as a freshman, it was not always the easiest path on the road to graduation.

"During my sophomore year at SVSU, I had taken on too many things, which resulted in me being extremely overwhelmed and thinking that I was going to change my major and transfer to a different school," Kennedy said. "I decided to talk to my pre-law advisor who helped me realize that I had too many things on my plate and that I needed to let something go."

For Kennedy, letting go meant focusing on her dreams of being a lawyer and building connections with political science faculty and students. Kennedy became involved in SVSU's nationally competitive moot court program, continued her involvement with her sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma, and joined the national political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha.

Now Kennedy is preparing for her next steps at the University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville in the fall.

The pre-law track and moot court participation at SVSU helped Kennedy gain the skills she will need in law school.

"Through moot court I have been able to participate in three regional competitions, and I qualified and competed in two national competitions," she said. "I have gotten the experience of creating oral arguments in front of lawyers and judges from around the country, and I have been able to write a legal brief which placed top 10 in the nation.

"I do not believe that I would be as prepared or know this much about the legal field had I gone to another university."
