5 Things for December

5 Things for December @ Monterey County Free Libraries

The year 2022 is coming to an end, schools are getting ready for winter break, and Monterey County Free Libraries will be closed for winter recess starting December 24, 2022, through January 2, 2023. Before you cuddle up by the fire for the long winter nights, make sure you stock up on plenty of reading, listening, and viewing material from your local library.

1. To add incentive to reading, sign up to join the Winter Reading Program for a chance to win some prizes. The Winter Reading Program will last the entire months of December and January (December 1 through January 31). Everyone who participates and reads a total of 6 hours will get a MCFL keychain prize and your name will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a prize basket. Visit your local branch to pick-up a reading log or sign-up online through Beanstack: https://emcfl.beanstack.com/Ask at your local branch for details on the Winter Reading Program or look at our website for more info.

2. December is a month rich with celebrations around the winter season. Visit your local library to see displays and learn more about winter holidays from different religious and cultural groups. Hanukkah starts December 18, Winter Solstice is on December 21, Christmas is on December 25 and Kwanza begins December 26. Check out some books or DVDs to learn more.

3. Remember to visit your local branch to pick up this month's Grab and Go Activity Bag starting December 13. The activity is to make your own kazoo. It's the perfect activity for a season of festivities and fun. Family members can work on it together and learn the science behind what makes the kazoo a kazoo.

4. Reading is a great family activity whether it's a physical book or a book online. This month's featured online resource of the month is Tumblebooks. Tumblebooks is an awesome resource with animated picture books for students at the elementary school level. If you run out of physical books, just visit Tumblebooks at the MCFL website, eMCFL.org.

5. We're now on TikTok! Make sure you start following @MCLibraries to check out all our fun and exciting content.

Even though the branches will be closed to in-person services from December 24 through January 2, our online resources and downloadable books and audiobooks are available 24/7, so you will never run out of reading material. We wish you all a Happy Holiday season and look forward to seeing you at the library.
