The Boston Police Department Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Sergeant John F. Montague who Died in the Line of Duty 95 Years Ago Today

BPD Remembers: Today the men and women of the Boston Police Department remember Sergeant John F. Montague who died in the line of duty 95 years ago today.

Sergeant Montague was ordered to take a strength test per part of the civil service examination for promotion. Sergeant Montague collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where he passed away. Montague complained before his death that the test caused something to "snap" in his back. Two other officers were admitted to the Faulkner Hospital after taking the test suffering from strain caused by the test, with one Officer in critical condition.

Sergeant Montague served 24 years with the Boston Police Department, and was assigned to Division 1.

Sergeant Montague was laid to rest at the Saint John's Cemetery in Worcester. His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C., Panel 37, West Line 32. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.
