Reed Statement on U.S. Senate Dismissing Baseless Impeachment Charges Against DHS Sec. Mayorkas

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, after the U.S. Senate moved to dismiss the trumped-up articles of impeachment against U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over a policy disagreement, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:

"The Senate was right to dismiss the House of Representatives' baseless articles of impeachment. These charges clearly did not rise to the "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" standard set by the Constitution. Put simply, policy disagreements should not be addressed through the impeachment process.

"Congress has too much serious work on its plate to waste time. We must move forward to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act before it expires on Friday and opens up a serious national security vulnerability. We also need bipartisan cooperation to pass critical national security supplemental funding to help keep Americans safe and support our allies. We need to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration before it expires on May 10th. And for those who are now concerned about border security, maybe they should have voted with Democrats on the $20.2 billion bipartisan border security bill that Republicans blocked in February. Time is of the essence, and there isn't another moment to waste."
