HRC 55th Session: General debate under Agenda Item 6: Universal Periodic Review

HRC 55th Session: General debate under Agenda Item 6: Universal Periodic Review

26 March, 2024

President,

The UPR serves as a fundamental mechanism that advances the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide. The UPR is a catalyst for the improvements rather than just a review process. However, we must also acknowledge the challenges that persist. Human rights violations continue to occur in various part of the world, including in our region, affecting vulnerable and indigenous populations and undermining the principles of equality, justice and freedom. It's our collective responsibility to address and prevent these issues and ensure that human rights are upheld universally.

To make progress in the UPR process, in 2022 the UPR Group of Friends initiated a resolution (51/30) on "Strengthening the voluntary funds for the universal periodic review mechanism of the Human Rights Council".

Moreover, last year the same Group of Friends delivered the Joint Statement on UPR and held side events on the contribution of the UPR to strengthening national human rights protection systems (28.09.2023, 54th Session of the HRC) as well as on the contribution of legal professions to the UPR (10.07.2023, 53th session of the HRC).

Armenia believes that states must prioritize the production of high-quality reports, based on genuine consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including civil society organizations. By working together to promote dialogue, accountability and cooperation the UPR will foster a culture of respect for human rights and contribute to the global advancement of human rights standards.

In conclusion, Armenia reaffirms its commitment to the UPR process and its underlying principles.

Thank you.
