Allegheny Health Network to Provide Walk-in Mammography Services

PITTSBURGH- Early detection is the key to beating breast cancer - which is why Allegheny Health Network (AHN) will host its first Spring Walk-In Mammogram campaign from April 1, 2024, through June 14, 2024, encouraging women over 40 to walk in without an appointment, or to self-schedule their mammograms during the spring and summer months.

Walk-in appointments will be offered Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm at two AHN locations: Allegheny General Hospital Breast Center, Hemlock Building, 320 East North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212; and the North Fayette Health + Wellness Pavilion, 200 Quinn Dr, Pittsburgh, PA 15275.

"One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime," said Dr. Suzanne Coopey, director of Breast Surgery for AHN and Chair of the Breast Cancer Program for the AHN Cancer Institute. "The idea behind the Spring Walk-In Mammogram Campaign is to make it as easy as possible for women to get a 20-minute mammogram, a potentially lifesaving screening. Due to improved treatments and advocacy for regular mammography screenings, breast cancer mortality in the U.S. has dropped more than 40 percent in the last few decades."

To be eligible for a walk-in mammogram, you do not have to be an established AHN patient. However, the patient cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding, experiencing current breast issues, or have had recent upper-body surgeries or mobility-limiting surgeries. Additionally, the patient cannot have received a mammogram within the last 12 months.

Patients will be responsible for copays and other out-of-pocket expenses as determined by their health insurance plan.

"We are proud to offer AHN Breast Care Centers at 22 locations in two states," said Bethany Casagranda, DO, Chair of the AHN Imaging Institute. "The Walk-in Mammography services at AGH and the North Fayette Health + Wellness Pavilion both offer state-of-the-art imaging and convenient scheduling options for our patients. We are recommending this service for all women over the age of 40 and younger women with a family history of breast cancer."

Allegheny General Hospital Breast Center offers screening and diagnostic mammography, as well as breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, which takes multiple images in "slices" that allow doctors to see internal breast tissue in sharp detail, minimizing false-positive and false-negative readings.

North Fayette Health + Wellness Pavilion, which opened in 2023, offers a comprehensive imaging suite with MRI, CT, X-ray, DEXA, ultrasound, mammography, echocardiography, and vascular screening. The Pavilion also houses one of the region's first 3T MRI - a leading-edge technology that produces exceptionally detailed images of the anatomy - as well as dual-source CT capabilities, both firsts for the North Fayette region.
