CPOC’s statement on guilty plea in Thomas “T.J.” Siderio case

Philadelphia - The Philadelphia Police Oversight Commission acknowledges today's news regarding former Philadelphia police officer Edsaul Mendoza's guilty plea to third-degree murder in the shooting of 12-year-old Thomas "T.J." Siderio more than two years ago.

While this plea cannot bring T.J. back, we hope it will signal the close of a painful chapter his family and the community has experienced. Our thoughts remain with T.J.'s family and friends as they continue to navigate the pain of this tragic loss. While this incident occurred 2 years ago, it is important to note that it has been 2 years of birthdays, holidays and memories without T.J.

The Commission remains committed to overseeing police practices and ensuring that officers are held accountable for their actions. We recognize the importance of transparency, accountability, and justice in policing, and we will continue to work tirelessly to promote these values within our community.

This case demonstrates the essential need for rigorous oversight and reform in law enforcement. We commend the efforts of the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and all parties involved in bringing this case to a just resolution. Their dedication to upholding the law and seeking justice sets a vital precedent for future cases involving police misconduct.
