Grassley took how much from the pharmaceutical industry?! – Daily High Five

1. WHO'S GRASSLEY WORKING FOR? : The Cedar Rapids Gazette's Fact Checker team has confirmed that Sen. Chuck Grassley has taken nearly $1.4 million from the pharmaceutical industry in his over 40 years in Washington. Now his repeated efforts to dismantle or destroy the Affordable Care Act are starting to make sense. Share the tweet below to tell Sen. Grassley that he works for his constituents, not his corporate pharmaceutical donors.

And here's some other news we're keeping an eye on today:

2. REPUBLICANS VOTE TO BLOCK INSULIN CAP: Speaking of lowering prescription drug prices, Senators had the chance to solidify a $35 cap on insulin yesterday. But 43 Republicans, including Sen. Grassley and Ernst, voted against the measure. This vote is unconscionable. All Americans deserve to get the care they need without going broke.

3. INFLATION REDUCTION ACT PASSES: The insulin cap would have been part of a larger spending bill that did pass the Senate over the weekend. The Inflation Reduction Act will lower costs for working families, fight inflation, and invest in combating climate change - all without raising taxes on anyone making less than $400,000. Not surprisingly, Senators Grassley and Ernst voted against the legislation likely in an effort to protect their corporate interests.

4. FUTURE OF IOWA'S PUBLIC EDUCATION: Students in Iowa will soon be headed back to school and this editorial from the Des Moines Register perfectly encapsulates the issues our public school system will be facing this year. Thanks to attacks from Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Republican-led legislature, schools are facing massive teacher shortages. It's time our leaders stand with Iowa's education professionals and fully fund our public schools to make sure every student gets the education they deserve.

5. NEW SUBVARIANT: Health experts say a new subvariant of the COVID-19 virus is growing in the Midwest, including here in Iowa. BA.4.6 is a subvariant of the omicron variant and it appears to be increasing more than other variants in our state. Health experts say we don't need to panic, but Iowans should remain cautious and take proper precautions against the coronavirus.
