The Fifth IEA-IEF-OPEC Symposium on Coal and Gas Market Outlooks to be held on 28 April

Vienna, Austria, 23 April 2021--The International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Energy Forum (IEF) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will hold the Fifth Symposium on Coal and Gas Market Outlooks on Wednesday, 28 April 2021, via videoconference.

The fifth edition of the Symposium will be hosted by the IEA and co-organized by the IEF and OPEC. The participating delegations will be led by Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Mr. Joseph McMonigle, Secretary General of the International Energy Forum and Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo of OPEC.

In highlighting the symposium's importance, Secretary General Barkindo stated: 'The IEA-IEF-OPEC Symposium on Coal and Gas Market Outlooks serves as an important pillar of the ongoing joint work programme that has been developed by the three international energy organizations.'

'By bringing together decision makers and industry experts, the Symposium, now in its fifth edition, will provide a vital platform to better understand the conditions of gas and coal as energy sources and examine their prospects from the short to the long term,' he added.

Barkindo noted: 'It is needless to say that such analyses and meetings support our efforts to enhance our comprehension of the global energy transition, in which all sources of energy, including oil, are expected to play a role to combat the plight of energy poverty.'

The Symposium will feature a wide range of speakers and participants from OPEC Member Countries and non-OPEC oil producing and consuming nations, in addition to representatives from the private sector and technical experts.

The Symposium forms part of the trilateral work programme established by the three organizations in 2010 to enhance dialogue and exchange views on issues relevant to the energy sector.

This year's edition will address numerous key issues related to natural gas and coal in the short, medium and long term, including demand, supply and investment trends, as well as the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and future outlooks in relation to the energy transition.
