International Summer and Winter University FUBiS at Freie Universität Berlin Welcomes Students to the Lankwitz Campus

After two years of online teaching, Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) recommenced courses and activities on campus in Lankwitz this term. On Sunday, 137 students from 16 countries began coursework in person. During the six-week term, students take German language classes alongside courses in other subjects. Most of the students are from the United States, Canada, and Singapore. The term will run until July 16.

At FUBiS the students can choose between German language classes and various other classes taught in English, or a combination of the two. There are seminars on a variety of topics, including the history of Germany during National Socialism, the European Union and migration in Europe, as well as European art history.

For all FUBiS courses, Freie Universität Berlin awards credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) system. Upon successful completion of the program, students can receive up to 14 ECTS credits that can be accepted by their home university and count toward the total credits required for their degree program.

The academic program also includes field trips, including a boat trip on the Spree River, a street art tour, a guided tour to important sites of the 1968 student movement, as well as a guided tour of the Reichstag building. Individual courses also offer program participants additional field trips on specific subjects related to the course topic.

The FUBiS Summer University was held for the first time in 1998. In 2007 a winter term was added. In 2018 the academic quality of FUBiS was recognized for the second time by the Forum on Education Abroad through its Quality Improvement Program (QUIP). It is the only summer and winter university in Germany that successfully completed the QUIP evaluation. In 2020 in response to the pandemic, the summer and winter university programs moved online. Since then, around 250 students have participated in exclusive online experiences.
