FCHR Host Annual Denim Day Luncheon April 24

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations will host its annual Denim Day Luncheon at Studio 215, 215 Williams St. on April 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free event is to raise awareness about sexual violence prevention and support for sexual assault survivors.

Community members planning to attend the Fayetteville event must RSVP by April 18. To RSVP the Denim Day Luncheon, visit www.eventcreate.com/e/denimday.

Denim Day is the longest-standing campaign for the prevention of and awareness about sexual violence, urging community members to wear jeans as a symbol of solidarity.

Denim Day dates back to 1992 when a young woman in Italy was raped by her driving instructor whose alibi was that since the woman had been wearing tight jeans, and had to remove them, it was consensual sex. A judge accepted the 'jean alibi,' and reversed the conviction of the rapist.

The women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court, inspiring others across the world to protest the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.
