Mexico and Chile hold 5th meeting for bilateral consultations on multilateral issues
  • Foreign affairs representatives reviewed the current priority multilateral issues for both countries and exchanged experiences and best practices for their feminist foreign policies.

On April 22, Mexico and Chile held the fifth meeting for bilateral consultations on multilateral issues in Santiago, Chile. The meeting was chaired by the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the Foreign Ministry, Joel Hernández García, and the Director for Multilateral Affairs at the Chilean Foreign Ministry, Carla Serazzi.

The Chilean delegation included the head of the Cooperation Division of the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation (AGCID), Daniel Castillo; Denisse Estay and Pablo Bravo from the Multilateral Affairs Division; and Francisca Acevedo and Claudia Godoy from the Feminist Foreign Policy Area.

The Mexican delegation included embassy officials in Chile: Ambassador Laura Moreno Rodríguez; Deputy Chief of Mission Carlos Iván Mendoza Aguirre; Political Affairs Officer Enrique Romero Leal; International Cooperation Officer Rodrigo Álvarez Tenorio; and Feminist Foreign Policy Coordinator, Ximena Mariscal de Alba.

At the meeting, the Mexican and Chilean officials highlighted the bilateral collaboration in regional and multilateral forums, and recognized the countries' shared foreign policy views and values, and their emphasis on multilateral organizations, with the UN at the center, in order to ensure international peace and security.

They also noted the importance of strengthening human rights, mainly in the context of the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference, women's rights, and gender equality and social justice, as part of the two countries' feminist foreign policies.

Finally, in reviewing the progress made in negotiating the Pact for the Future and the instrument on pandemics within the World Health Organization (WHO), Mexico and Chile recognized the joint work and areas of agreement between the two countries.

These consultations reinforce the bonds of friendship between Mexico and Chile and strengthen multilateralism in the face of our current challenges.
