Defence Minister’s message marking 20 years since Romania joined NATO

Today we mark 20 years since Romania officially deposited the instruments of accession to the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization, a historical act by which our country was integrated into the Euro-Atlantic family and evolved alongside the rest of the NATO member states.

It has been twenty years during which Romania received the most solid security warranties due to its membership to the most powerful political-military alliance in the world, and became stronger and more visible at Euro-Atlantic level.

This path cannot have been possible without the Romanian Armed Force and its dedicated personnel. Today we pay homage to the heroes who fell on duty in the theaters of operations and became anchors in time for the next generations. At the same time, I express my respect and gratitude for the soldiers injured in battle, for the veterans of the theaters of operations as well as for the Ministry of National Defence personnel who has contributed to our country's development within the Alliance. Not least, I thank the Romanian soldiers who are currently participating in NATO-led missions, exercises and operations and prove that our country is not just a beneficiary but also a security provider alongside its strategic partners.

In this context, I assure the NATO member countries' soldiers deployed on Romanian territory, who ensure an effective and strengthened deterrence and defence posture in the Black Sea region and on the entire Eastern Flank, of my highest consideration. The allies' contribution to Romania's security is a strong proof of Allied solidarity and cohesion as well as of NATO's collective defence capability.

The North-Atlantic Alliance marks this year 75 years since its establishment. The seven and half decades of the Alliance have been marked by more or less troubled periods in terms of security. NATO's fundamental role and values in ensuring peace, freedom and the attachment to the values of democracy stand for the most important achievements of this political-military alliance.

The NATO membership is one of fundamental pillars of the Romanian defence and security system alongside the EU membership and the Strategic Partnership with the USA.
After 20 years since our accession, our country is an ally fully committed to safeguarding the NATO values and I express my conviction that the North-Atlantic Alliance will stand the test of time in ensuring the freedom and security of the next generations.
