Rep. Van Duyne Leads Effort Demanding U.S. Customs and Border Protection Investigate Visa Fraud by U.S. Colleges and Universities

Washington, D.C.- Today, Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne led a letter to Troy Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner, demanding U.S. Customs and Border Protection investigate possible cases of visa fraud committed by colleges and universities when they fail to enforce rules unilaterally to protect foreign national students.

"Colleges and Universities' main responsibilities are to educate and protect their students. Since the October attacks on the State of Israel, direct calls for violence against Jewish students and destruction of campus property have gone on with little consequence. Most schools have failed to enforce their own rules, even when they are explicitly violated, to protect foreign national students." said Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne. "When campuses refuse to apply consequences to students based solely on their visa status, they are skirting U.S. law as a visa holder's eligibility to remain in the U.S. lawfully would come into question if disciplined by their school. I demand the U.S. Customs and Border Protection initiate an investigation into colleges and universities refusing to enforce their own rules, to protect foreign nationals, potentially committing visa fraud and breaking U.S. law."

Background:

• Congresswoman Van Duyne recently introduced the "Hamas Supporters Have No Home Here Act" which amends the Immigration and Nationality Act by expanding removability from the United States to include any crime committed during participation in a pro-terrorist or antisemitic rally.

• Massachusetts Institute of Technology walked back threatsto expel students who refused to comply with student guidelines and policies, with the university president citing "visa issues" - meaning, the suspension or expulsion of foreign students could lead to their visas being revokedand ultimately their deportation.
  

• Columbia University and Barnard College createda "Doxing Resource Group" to scrub potentially damning digital evidence that could lead to the visa revocation and deportation of foreign students who participated in rallies in support of terrorism and the murder of Jews.
