Prime Minister Kishida visits Nagoya University Global Campus at NC State University

Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, and his spouse, Kishida Yuko, visited the Nagoya University Global Campus at NC State University on Friday, April 12th.

Nagoya University President Sugiyama Naoshi explained to the Prime Minister and Mrs. Kishida Nagoya University's Global Multi-Campus initiative. Prime Minister Kishida and President Sugiyama discussed the "Ryugaku Academy" that Nagoya University operates at its Global Campus facilities, including student numbers and the use of classrooms. Nagoya University student Tajima Chisako (School of Education), explained to Prime Minister Kishida about the English classes she took while participating in Ryugaku Academy last summer.

They then met with seven Japanese students who are currently studying in North Carolina or are planning to this year. Ms. Tajima will be at NC State University from the fall semester this year, and Tokunaga Kota from the School of Medicine is currently studying abroad at Duke University.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Kishida spoke of the goal of more than doubling the number of Japanese students studying abroad to 500,000 per year over the next 10 years through the promotion of the "Japan-Mobility and Internationalisation: Re-engaging and Accelerating Initiative for future generations." He then stated that the Government of Japan will expand projects that support the overseas expansion of Japanese universities and the conclusion of inter-university agreements in order to increase the number of exchange students. He also noted that the government and the private sector will work together to enhance financial support measures for students studying abroad.
