Ames Firefighters Respond to House Fire

The Ames Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 11) at 3415 Emerald Drive. Ames Fire crews arrived on scene to light smoke coming from the garage. Two occupants had safely evacuated from the one-story, single family rental home.

Crews made entry into the home and discovered flames coming through the ceiling above the fireplace. After placing tarps over valuables in the room, firefighters removed a large section of the ceiling to access the fire in the attic. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure. The house sustained moderate fire damage to the ceiling structural members, and the occupants are temporarily displaced until the ceiling can be repaired, and electricity restored to the house.

"By leaving the residence and calling for immediate assistance when they first noticed smoke, these occupants were able to get themselves to safety," said Fire Chief Rich Higgins.

Red Cross has been notified and is assisting the occupants.

The Ames Fire Department reminds residents to check their smoke detectors every month. This will ensure they are operating correctly and will provide early warning in case of a fire.
