On Thursday 18 April 2024, at the Ministry of National Defence, a contract was signed between the National Defence Fund and the Ministry of Health, for the grant of 150 acres (150,000 square meters) of the former Camp "KARATASIOU A", in order for the New Oncological Hospital to be built in Thessaloniki.

The granted land is at Pavlou Mela Municipality, in Polychni, Thessaloniki, right across the existing Hospitals PAPAGEORGIOU and 424 General Army Training Hospital. This spot is selected as the best solution of siting, since it is adjacent to the 2 aforementioned big Hospitals on the regional Thessaloniki road.

With today's contract the governmental announcement begins an implementation process for the construction of the New Oncological Hospital in Thessaloniki, which decisively contributes to the provision of more qualitative health services in the North and Central Greece.

Upon the signing of the contract, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis made the following address:

"The Signing of the Contract for granting 150 acres of former Camp KARATASIOU A, between the National Defence Fund and the Ministry of Health, opens the road for the construction of the New Oncological Hospital in Thessaloniki. It is a project of emblematic character, with a huge social imprint in the North and Central Greece, through which another pre-election commitment of the Government is effected, with the decisive contribution of the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikos Dendias. I would like to congratulate the National Defence Fund for its contribution in implementing this important grant, which proves in practice the deep social sign of the Armed Forces, who always stand by the society, where and when needed, contributing decisively in the protection of the citizens' welfare and their equal access in the highest commodity of the medical care. At the same time, we ensured important offsets for the National Defence Fund, proving that we are using in the best possible way the real estate of the Armed Forces."

The Deputy Minister of Health Mr. Marios Themistokleous stated:

"Our commitments become practice. The beginning of this attempt is the implementation of the commitment on behalf of our Government towards the citizens of Northern Greece. This hospital will function as a model in the whole Balkans region in the field of health, providing high level services.

The project includes the relocation and operation of an oncologic complex which will aim at the diagnosis, treatment and promotion of health. The hospital will have a capacity of 425 beds, equipped with the state of the art medical technology, ensuring more effective services and modern treatment methods. The complex will have a unit of relieving care for patients in the final stage. It will be the first project of Cooperation between the Public and Private Sector in the field of health in our country.

I would like to warmly thank the National Defence Fund for the valuable grant of the former Camp, the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikos Dendias and the Deputy Minister Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis for our effective cooperation".
