'SIRTI DIGITAL SOLUTIONS AT SMAU 2023: CLEANER AIR IN THE RAILWAY MAINTENANCE FACILITY THANKS TO BIOTECHNOLOGY AT THE TRENORD FACILITY IN MILAN FIORENZA, THE LARGEST IN EUROPE,[...]

A project that integrates digital and sustainability, developed by the Sirti Digital Solutions team in co-creation with Trenord, leverages an innovative biotechnology-based air purification solution capable of capturing impurities through a completely natural process. The installation at the Trenord Fiorenza maintenance facility, the largest in Europe, will improve air quality in offices and common areas, such as the cafeteria and changing rooms, to enhance the well-being of workers, all within the framework of sustainable development and open innovation.

Milan, October 19, 2023 - Sirti Digital Solutions, an innovation hub in the field of network infrastructure development, digital services, and cybersecurity, has embarked on an innovative project with Trenord, a Lombard railway company and one of the most important local public transportation companies in Europe. This project integrates digital and sustainability to improve air quality for the benefit of employees in offices and other non-industrial buildings.

"A project that integrates digital and sustainability, developed by the Sirti Digital Solutions team in co-creation with Trenord, leverages an innovative biotechnology-based air purification solution capable of capturing impurities through a completely natural process. The installation at the Trenord Fiorenza maintenance facility, the largest in Europe, will improve air quality in offices and common areas, such as the cafeteria and changing rooms, to enhance the well-being of workers, all within the framework of sustainable development and open innovation.

At the Trenord Fiorenza maintenance facility, covering an area of 450,000 square meters, of which approximately 10,000 square meters are dedicated to non-industrial buildings, an experimental air purification solution called Pure Air Zones has been installed to improve air quality in the working environments. The trial focuses on areas with higher population density, including offices, cafeteria, training rooms, infirmary, and changing rooms. In these spaces, a total of 13 bioreactors based on AIRcel, an innovative and unique biotechnology developed by the start-up U-Earth Biotechnologies, have been installed. AIRcel purifies the air through a completely natural biotechnological process of electrostatic attraction and bio-oxidation, which transforms the absorbed impurities into water, carbon dioxide, and a non-toxic base. It operates with a specific blend of certified biotechnological additives, which must be integrated into the purifier on a monthly basis. The device, with negligible energy consumption, purifies the air from bacteria and fine dust particles.

In the areas where the Pure Air Zones devices are installed, they are connected to monitoring stations that measure key air quality parameters in real-time, such as CO2, temperature, humidity, VOC, and PM2.5 (fine dust particles). The data collected by individual sensors are gathered on a management and monitoring platform developed by Sirti Digital Solutions in the form of a digital dashboard. Specifically, the platform will be responsible for the digital representation of the status and performance of the devices deployed in the field (in IoT terminology, a digital twin), not only collecting air quality measurements and visually representing them through dedicated dashboards but also managing maintenance activities.

Sirti Digital Solutions will also support the railway company in the maintenance and assistance activities envisaged in the project.

With its capacity, the small AIRcel bioreactor purifies the air as much as 276 trees would.

The Pure Air Zone project is part of the broader Sustainability journey that Sirti and Trenord have undertaken for years, particularly addressing two of the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations (SDGs), namely those related to Health and Well-being (3) and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (9).

"We are particularly pleased to be a partner of Trenord and to collaborate with the start-up U-Earth Biotechnologies in this innovative project, awarded by SMAU 2023, aimed at improving working conditions and creating well-being for the people at the Trenord Fiorenza Maintenance facility," said Carmine Scalzi, Sales Director of Sirti Digital Solutions Spa. "Investing in and developing technologies like this, which significantly enhance the well-being of people in their workplace and, at the same time, contribute to digital innovation without impacting the environment, allows us to concretely contribute to the path of sustainable development in our region. The project is a virtuous example of how through the collaboration between innovative companies and start-ups, innovation can become an enabling factor for the digital transformation of entire industrial value chains.

The project received the SMAU Innovation Award, a recognition of the strong innovation propensity of Italian companies. An award presented to companies and public administrations that have introduced innovative solutions, obtaining significant benefits for their business through collaboration with startups and innovative companies, following a logic of Co-Innovation and/or Open Innovation."

Please note that some technical terms related to the project have been left in their original Italian form to maintain clarity and accuracy.
