Neoenergia Institute promotes action for the National Environment Week in partnership with SAVE Brasil

Between June 1st and 6th, the Neoenergia Institute will promote a series of activities on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, in partnership with SAVE Brasil, through the Flyways Brasil project. The project, supported by the Institute since 2015, aims to ensure the conservation of migratory waders and their habitats, contributing to the preservation of species at the hemispheric level. The initiative reinforces the involvement of the Institute and Neoenergia with World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5.
The activities will take place in several municipalities of the coastal region of Rio Grande do Sul: Galinhos, Guamaré and Macau, as well as the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) Ponta do Tubarão, in Diogo Lopes. The program includes educational and awareness social actions aimed at neighboring communities, including trails with bird watching, craft workshops, beach cleaning, outdoor cinema and lectures.
The Flyways Brasil project takes place in one of the most emblematic states for Neoenergia, a pioneer company in Brazil in renewable energies and energy transition. It was in Rio Grande do Norte where the company began operating more than 20 years ago and where the Iberdrola Group installed its first wind farm in Brazil. The objective of this action in the Environment Week is to promote the basic guidelines of Neoenergia and the Institute: the fight against climate change, the protection of biodiversity and the environment and the preservation of natural heritage.
"Flyways is the oldest project of the Neoenergia Institute in activity and carries out important work for the conservation of migratory species and their habitats on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The censuses bring very important information about the incidence and behavior of the waders of the region, encouraging the strengthening of public policies for the conservation of the complex network of local ecosystems. It is a transformative initiative, which values the engagement of the population and environmental education, as well as the encouragement of sustainable tourism in this ecological sanctuary," says the director of the Neoenergia Institute, Renata Chagas.
In 2022, about 26,000 shorebirds of 19 species were counted by Flyways Brasil, 14 of them migratory and five considered endangered by the Brazilian government. With the work developed by the project, the coast of Rio Grande do Sul is about to receive international recognition from the Hemispheric Network of Reserves for Shorebirds (WHSRN). The site will be identified as an ecological sanctuary and will stimulate the strengthening of public policies aimed at the conservation of local ecosystems.
