Nearly 300 Less Bikes Stolen in West Yorkshire in Past Year

Wednesday, 27 March, 2024

West Yorkshire Police has seen a shift in gear with a 12.7 per cent reduction in bicycle thefts over the past year.

The Force has an established partnership with Leeds City Council with regular bike marking events being held across the district. Over the last 12 months there has been a 15.5 per cent reduction in reported offences in Leeds District.

Similar partnerships are now being put in place with Bradford Council and Wakefield Council.

Force Crime Prevention Officer Paul Denison said: "The reductions we have seen equate to around 280 less bikes being stolen.

"Marking and registering your bike acts as a deterrent to thieves as it makes your bike harder to sell on and therefore much less attractive a prospect.

"I would urge bicycle owners to join us at one of regular bike marking events where you can get your bike added to the National BikeRegister."
