Announcement of Finalists “Creative Guizhou - Songtao Gift” Call for Designs

The open call fell into three design categories: packaging design, souvenirs, and guesthouse design. The call concluded with a total of 184 designs received from 51 institutions and companies in 16 provinces, including 124 tourism souvenirs, 42 packaging designs, and 18 guesthouse designs.

Based on the criteria of brand-building, market potential, cultural awareness, creativity, technical rigor and practicality, as well as the designs' applicability at the site-level and thematic alignment with the project, 38 designs were final-listed, including 15 tourism souvenirs, 15packaging and 8 homestays, after three rounds of holistic review involving a total of 14 experts from leading institutions in the fields of art and design, representatives from government departments at the Guizhou provincial and Songtao county levels responsible for living heritage safeguarding, and UNESCO. The 38 selected designs hold potential of contributing to the cultural tourism development and cultural brand-building of Songtao. The finalists are as follows:

1. Tourism Souvenir

This category includes creative cultural products such as gifts, souvenirs and stationeries, which incorporate living heritage elements such as Songtao Miao embroidery and silversmith techniques, that both have regional cultural characteristics and meet the demands of modern life and have market potential.

2. Packaging Design

This category includes packaging design with iconic local characteristics targeting Songtao's local agricultural products, which also incorporates marketing and visual artistic expressions of the products.

3. Guesthouse Design

This category includes designs for the identified guesthouses, both exterior and interior designs as well as designs for matching amenities, within the setting of Dawan Village that respects local natural resources and cultural identities, and are easy to promote, and easy to build or renovate.

The 38 selected designs are planned to be presented at an announcement event and exhibition during the Wujiang Village Living Heritage Carnival on 24 April 2023 in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, and shall be incubated in collaboration with local counterparts in Songtao to facilitate their further contribution to the cultural development and rural revitalization of Songtao County.
