Singapore and the United States Enhance Cooperation on Environmental and Climate Protection

Singapore, 15 April 2024 - The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and the United States (U.S.) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance bilateral cooperation on environmental management and climate protection today.

2 The MOU was signed in Singapore by Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Ms Grace Fu and Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator Dr Richard Spinrad.

3 Under the MOU, both sides will strengthen cooperation on a range of environmental and climate issues, including climate monitoring and prediction, coastal science, and modelling to support coastal protection and flood resilience efforts, earth observations for environmental monitoring, and heat resilience. MSE, including its Statutory Boards - National Environment Agency and PUB the national water agency, and NOAA will also conduct technical exchanges, information sharing and joint publications and projects under this MOU.

4 "Singapore and the U.S. enjoy longstanding cooperation on environmental sustainability, underpinned by a shared commitment to climate and environmental action," said Minister Fu. "This MOU will provide more opportunities for such cooperation, and we look forward to working closely with NOAA to support our efforts in preparing for climate change."

5 "We're delighted to formalise our partnership with Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment," said NOAA Administrator Dr Richard Spinrad. "Globally, we just experienced the hottest year on record, and we need to work collaboratively to address the impacts of our changing climate. We look forward to sharing some of our successes and to learning from each other."
