Giant ‘get well’ card inspires breast cancer patients

(SACRAMENTO)

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a giant "get well" card for breast cancer patients undergoing treatment was delivered to the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. The card, signed by Sacramento Republic FC fans at the Oct. 2 Breast Health Awareness Night, is 10 feet tall and filled with inspirational messages such as:

"Stay strong and believe you are a mighty warrior!"

"Sac Republic loves you."

"Girl Power"

"You Got This!"

"Lost too many. Let's find the cure."

UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Physician-in-Chief Richard Bold and Executive Director of Oncology Services Kristin Mensonides accepted the wooden card on Oct. 27. The oversized card is adorned with a big pink ribbon-the universal symbol of hope in the fight against breast cancer.

The card is now proudly displayed in the lobby of the cancer center's north building, in view of patients as they enter the lobby and take the elevator to the infusion room to receive chemotherapy.

"We positioned this huge gesture of support for our cancer patients so that they can't miss seeing the caring words inscribed on the beautiful card," said Bold. "We thank Sacramento Republic FC and its fans for not only motivating our patients, but also raising awareness about breast cancer this month."

During Breast Health Awareness Night on Oct. 2, pink nets and corner flags decorated the soccer field during Sacramento Republic FC's game against the Tacoma Defiance. As fans came into Heart Health Park, they were asked to sign the giant breast cancer card. The first 2,000 fans to arrive received pink rally towels provided by season sponsor UC Davis Health.
