Texas A&M Law School Student Named Student Regent

[Link]BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Governor Greg Abbott has appointed third-year Texas A&M Law School student Cage Sawyers as the next student regent for The Texas A&M University System.

For the past year, Sawyers has been the student representative on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. His regents' term will run June 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025.

"I'm excited to give Texas students a voice for the best opportunities in education," Sawyers said.

In 2005, the 79th Texas Legislature authorized the governor to appoint non-voting student regents to each university system's board of regents.

"Thanks to Gov. Abbott for his thoughtful choice," said Chancellor John Sharp. "Student regents offer an important perspective, and I am sure Mr. Sawyers will do an outstanding job of representing his fellow students' interests."

"Students regents are vital," added Board Chairman Bill Mahomes. "They help keep the Board focused on the student experience and making sure that students have great opportunities to excel."

Sawyers replaces student regent Elizabeth "Annie" Valicek, an agribusiness and economics senior at West Texas A&M University.

Sawyers, 25, is from the Texoma region of North Texas, graduating as the valedictorian of Van Alstyne High School in 2017. Sawyers majored in Public Policy and Energy Technology at Texas Christian University, graduating summa cum laude in 2021. His legal education at Texas A&M is focused on franchising and licensing.

Sawyers is the founder and managing partner of 903 Capital + Advisory, a rural investment fund. He also founded and leads Sawyers' Salute to Service, a non-profit organization that helps veterans with their physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Robert B. Ahdieh, dean of the Texas A&M School of Law, said the school's recent rise in national law school rankings - 26^th in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report - helps recruit service-minded students like Sawyers.

"As Texas A&M Law continues its unprecedented rise in the rankings, we are lucky to be recruiting an ever-increasing number of students focused on public service," Ahdieh said.
