Moreno Valley Invites Artists to Submit for City’s Multi-Location Mural Project

The City of Moreno Valley is extending a call for local artists to submit proposals for the My MoVal Mural Project, a program allowing for the design and installation of murals at four locations throughout the City.

The My MoVal Mural Project was made possible through funding from the California Arts Council and a grant from the Inland SoCal Creative Corps, a component fund of the Inland Empire Community Foundation (IECF). The project is intended to increase community engagement within each of the City's four districts.

"Moreno Valley is overflowing with local talent, and these investments will ensure that our artists can showcase their skills in their home community," said Mayor Ulises Cabrera. "The My MoVal Mural Project will result in community-driven masterpieces that reflect our City's diversity. On behalf of our residents, we thank the Inland Empire Community Foundation for believing in the dreams of our residents."

The locations chosen for the project are the Conference & Recreation Center in District 1, Shadow Mountain Park in District 2, The Moreno Valley Public Library in District 3, and Fire Station 65 in District 4.

"Our Conference and Recreation Center (CRC) is the hub for events, recreation, and culture for Moreno Valley," added Council Member Elena Baca-Santa Cruz of District 1. "Thanks to the IECF, this mural project will further beautify our CRC, making it more welcoming than ever."

Each of the four murals will illustrate a different community message-Public Health and Pandemic Recovery (District 1), Water and Energy Conservation and Disaster Preparedness and Recovery (Districts 2 and 4), and Social Justice and Community Engagement (District 3).

"I can't think of a better way to tap into the strengths of our local artist community than this mural project," said Mayor Pro Tem Ed Delgado of District 2. "From Shadow Mountain Park and beyond, we are creating unique opportunities for our artists to thrive."

The submission period for artists runs from November 6 through December 6, 2023, and is open to residents of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Each artist will be allocated $15,000 per mural for the costs of materials and installation.

"Moreno Valley is finding creative ways to utilize art, both for the engagement of our community and the beautification of our City," said Council Member David Marquez of District 3. "I happily support this initiative, and I look forward to seeing our local artist community enhance the Moreno Valley Public Library."

Once applications are received, they will be considered by the Arts Commission and the Moreno Valley City Council. Selected applicants will have until May 31, 2024, to complete their mural.

"This mural project will be a testament to local art that places a focus on the entire community," said Council Member Cheylynda Barnard of District 4, "With this project, we are supporting local talent and beautifying our community, one mural at a time."

La ciudad de Moreno Valley está haciendo un llamado para que artistas locales presenten propuestas para el Proyecto de Murales My MoVal, un programa que permite el diseño e instalación de murales en cuatro ubicaciones de la ciudad.

El proyecto de murales My MoVal fue posible gracias a la financiación del Consejo de las Artes de California y una subvención del Cuerpo Creativo del Inland SoCal, un fondo componente de la Fundación Comunitaria del Inland Empire (IECF). El proyecto tiene la intención de aumentar la participación de la comunidad dentro de cada uno de los cuatro distritos de la Ciudad.

Las ubicaciones elegidas para el proyecto son el Centro de Conferencias y Recreación en el Distrito 1, el Parque Shadow Mountain en el Distrito 2, la Biblioteca Pública de Moreno Valley en el Distrito 3 y la Estación de Bomberos 65 en el Distrito 4.

"Nuestro Centro de Conferencias y Recreación (CRC, por sus siglas en inglés) es el centro de eventos, recreación y cultura para Moreno Valley", agregó la concejal Elena Baca-Santa Cruz del Distrito 1. "Gracias al IECF, este proyecto de mural embellecerá aún más nuestro CRC, haciéndolo más acogedor que nunca".

Cada uno de los cuatro murales ilustrará un mensaje comunitario diferente: Salud Pública y Recuperación de Pandemias (Distrito 1), Conservación de Agua y Energía y Preparación y Recuperación ante Desastres (Distritos 2 y 4), y Justicia Social y Participación Comunitaria (Distrito 3).

"No puedo pensar en una mejor manera de aprovechar las fortalezas de nuestra comunidad de artistas locales que este proyecto de murales", dijo el alcalde interino Ed Delgado del Distrito 2. "Desde Shadow Mountain Park y más allá, estamos creando oportunidades únicas para que nuestros artistas prosperen".

El período de presentación para artistas se extiende desde el 6 de noviembre hasta el 6 de diciembre de 2023 y está abierto a los residentes de los condados de Riverside y San Bernardino. A cada artista se le asignarán $15,000 por mural para los costos de materiales e instalación.
