Cleveland Clinic to Optimize Private 5G Network at New Hospital in Ohio

When Mentor Hospital opens this summer, Cleveland Clinic's new facility will feature a private 5G network, providing faster, secured connectivity to deliver an overall better patient and visitor experience. Because of the hospital's investment in a private 5G network, the use cases are seemingly limitless on how they can optimize this technology all while saving on costs, including patient check-in kiosks, enhanced digital displays, in-room infotainment for patients, patient monitoring, and more.

Verizon Business worked with Cleveland Clinic on this private 5G network deployment at the Mentor Hospital which is scheduled to open on July 11. The hospital will have 34 beds and is also expected to serve many ambulatory outpatients. In addition to the immediate benefits of secure and reliable connectivity, Cleveland Clinic Chief Information Officer Matthew Kull is looking to use this private 5G network to run patient monitoring applications inside and outside the facility.

In addition to remote monitoring of patients, Cleveland Clinic's Innovation Group is focused on predictive diagnoses based on analysis of collected patient data. The private 5G network will expand opportunities for this group.

"This collaboration supports our long-term vision for a fully digital hospital infrastructure," said Kull. "If we can provide 5G high bandwidth to our facilities, we can become more efficient, ensure better continuity of care as patients transition home and enhance the overall experience for our caregivers and patients."

All Mentor Hospital doctors and nurses will carry Verizon smart phones and will be able to connect to the private network radios. Patients and visitors will be able to connect to the network inside the hospital if they are customers of Verizon, one of its prepaid brands, or one of its MVNO or roaming partners.
