Top UN Authorities Will Participate in Session in Chile to Reflect on the Challenges of the Second World Summit for Social Development

25 April 2024|Announcement

This high-level seminar - organized by ECLAC and the ILO - will feature the presence of Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Paula Narváez, President of ECOSOC; and the Director-Generals of DESA, UNDP, UN Women, FAO and WHO.

On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, a high-level seminar entitled "Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development: Enhancing global efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda" will be inaugurated by Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO); and José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC's Executive Secretary and Coordinator of the United Nations Regional Economic Commissions in 2024.

At this event - which will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. local time in Chile (GMT-4) and will be transmitted via social media - participants will discuss how to enhance the global commitments around the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ahead of the Second World Summit for Social Development, which will be held in 2025. They will also analyze the path that countries have followed since the First World Summit for Social Development (held in Copenhagen in 1995), the changes that have occurred in conditions since then, and the central challenges that must be addressed to promote more inclusive and cohesive social development in the world.

To reduce poverty and inequality, promote social justice and non-discrimination and move towards more inclusive and sustainable societies in which no one is left behind - just as the 2030 Agenda sets forth - it is necessary to review strategies, reaffirm commitments and mobilize resources with multilateral and cooperative actions in a context of multiple, overlapping crises.

The United Nations (UN) has a fundamental role to play in this process by bringing together Member States and the international community. Through its regional economic commissions, agencies, funds, programs and UN country teams, the UN offers a strategic space for actions, reflections, dialogue and strengthening the trust and commitment needed to achieve consensus to renew efforts towards inclusive social development at the national, regional and global level.
