Times Wins 5 Awards From ASME

The New York Times Magazine won three National Magazine Awards, known as the Ellies, from the American Society of Magazine Editors, in the categories of Feature Writing, Service Journalism and Public Interest. The Magazine also won an ASME Award for Design, Photography and Illustration in the category of Print Design, and Sabiha Çimen, a guest essayist and photographer for Opinion, won for the Best News and Entertainment Story.

In the Feature Writing category, Jay Kirk was awarded for "They Saw the Horrific Aftermath of a Mass Shooting. Should We?" His piece chronicled the work of the forensic crime scene photographers who documented the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2013. Because of the sensitive nature of this reporting, the piece took many years to complete, and this award is a testament to Jay's incredible patience and empathy.

In the Service Journalism category, Susan Dominus was recognized for "Women Have Been Misled About Menopause," her life-changing story about the medical establishment's approach to menopause research and treatment. Susan's reporting was groundbreaking, and the article has sparked new research and policy change.

And in the Public Interest category, Hannah Dreier was awarded for her incredible series about the exploitation of underage migrant workers. Hannah's rigorous and tenacious reporting triggered congressional and labor department investigations, and after her reporting's revelations, the Biden administration announced a crackdown on child labor.

"Sue, Jay and Hannah reported and wrote incredible stories that impacted readers' lives by profoundly deepening their understanding of the world," said Jake Silverstein, editor of the Magazine, in a note to staff. "I'm extremely proud of them and of the many people at the Magazine whose hard work made these stories possible."
