Biodiversity observation network takes shape in Suzhou

Suzhou City has set up 7 biodiversity observation stations, with hopefully more to follow, marking the establishment of a biodiversity observation network covering a variety of species such as terrestrial vertebrates, insects and freshwater fish, according to data released by the Suzhou Eco-Environment Bureau on May 22.

One of the best ways to understand how our nature is changing is to closely monitor the health and diversity of wildlife. Suzhou has been working on its city-wide observation network for biodiversity protection in recent years, with stepped-up efforts in building biodiversity observation stations. Five of the first 7 stations have been completed and the other two are under construction. The station in Zhangjiagang released the annual reports on diversity of birds and aquatic life in 2021 and 2022 and it identified 50 species of phytoplankton, 25 species of zooplankton, 33 species of algae, 20 species of benthic animals, and 28 species of birds in 2022. And the station will be better equipped for biological monitoring by upgrading its tools.

"Suzhou's ever-improving biodiversity monitoring system has taken shape," said an official from the Suzhou Eco-Environment Bureau. Continuous efforts will be made to expand the monitoring scope and do a better job in biodiversity observation to promote the protection of important biological species and genetic resources.
