Virginia A. Cory Community Garden Designated as a Homegrown National Park

The Virginia A. Cory Community Garden at Monmouth University was recently designated as a Homegrown National Park for its dedication to regeneration of biodiversity and ecosystem function through the incorporation of native plantings. Homegrown National Park is a collective movement of individual homeowners, property owners, land managers, farmers, and any home gardeners planting native plants and removing most invasive plants.

Social work students and garden interns Arely Lazaro, Erin McDowell, and Camryn Levy, along with Garden Coordinator Teresa Maltz, introduced several species of native plants into the community garden beds, outside of member plots.

Currently, the garden includes the species, black-eyed susan, coneflower, goldenrod, aster, red cardinal flower, and more. Additional native plants are planned for planting as well.

The community garden features 53 garden beds and serves as an educational opportunity to learn gardening, sustainability, and wellness. Garden participants grow their own produce, following organic practices, and donate produce to local organizations for individuals in need.

Participating gardens can be found on the Homegrown National Park map.
