Watrous, NM - Fort Union National Monument is resuming their star parties, beginning Saturday May 22, 2021. The solitude, remoteness, and arid landscapes of Fort Union National Monument make it an ideal place for observing a natural dark sky. After sunset, the sky over the high prairie gives way to the glow of celestial bodies unaffected by the artificial light of distant communities. Immerse yourself in the culture and science of a natural night sky as rangers guide visitors through the remains of the old fort, then help identify distant stars and galaxies with the naked eye and telescopes.

Gates to this international dark sky designated park will re-open at 7:30 pm and the program, weather permitting, will be held at the front the visitors center from 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm. Please bring water and a jacket. To assure the safety of our staff and visitors, participants must wear a mask and social distance.

To reach Fort Union take exit 366 of I-25 at Watrous, NM on to State Highway 161, 8 miles west. For more information, contact Fort Union National Monument at (505) 425-8025. Visit www.nps.gov/foun, or like us on Facebook.
