I.S. and cybersecurity students take a step into professional world with business visit

From studying abroad to participating in internships, getting out of the classroom and into the real world makes students more marketable for their first job.

UWL students studying information systems and cybersecurity made their way out of the classroom and all the way to Owatonna, Minnesota Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5, to learn about information systems at the Federated Insurance I.S. College Fair.

Students explored various career prospects, gained insights into day-to-day operations, and learned about Federated-sponsored events and community involvement. The students also engaged with the Information Systems Department, a connection made possible through Alumna Jessica Dickhaus, who currently serves as a Systems Developer for Federated Insurance.

"I am currently pursuing an information system and a marketing major, and I found this opportunity with Federated Insurance to be like no other," says says Abigail Rivera, information systems major. "Being able to see what my career may look like after graduation and meeting great people was quite a unique experience that I will remember. In addition, I would like to thank Federated Insurance for hosting this event!"

Finding out whether a career or field is the right fit through in-person observation is one of the seven key ways to gain experience for the job market, according to UWL Advising & Career Services.

"Federated Insurance has been a great partner for UWL, offering internships and full-time positions. The growth potential here is immense," explains UWL Career Services staff member Carolyn Moe. "I had a fantastic time learning about IS opportunities during my guest visit, which I'm excited to pass on to future students and grads."

In addition to learning about the company, students also had time for fun, participating in an escape room challenge and a carnival.
