Alcohol Safety Education Program Reaches Thousands of High School Students in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties

Free course helps students to make better choices about alcohol safety

MIAMI & DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Youth Alcohol Awareness and Education Foundation, Inc.- established by Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits to fund programs that support alcohol safety and underage drinking prevention - today announced it has successfully completed the second year of its commitment to bring the AlcoholEdu® for High School alcohol safety education course to high school students in South Florida.

Made available at no charge to educators in public and private high schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the initiative has already positively impacted more than 3,370 students across 57 high schools in South Florida during the two years since the kickoff of the program in 2017. The alcohol safety education initiative is funded by the Foundation in partnership with Step Up For Students.

In this most recent 2018-19 school year, 1,770 students in 28 South Florida high schools completed the course and showed significant knowledge gains along with corresponding positive shifts in attitudes and behaviors. Feedback from participating students include:

  • 'I learned about the laws regarding underage alcohol consumption and host responsibility. I learned to not give in to peer pressure and to remind myself of my value and goals before making any decisions.' - Student, Miami-Dade County
  • 'I learned the importance of safety and making decisions when it comes to drinking. In addition, I learned many useful tips and observations to use to identify someone who may be drunk and how to help them.' - Student, Broward County
  • 'The most important thing that I learned during AlcoholEdu was that I should continue to remember and keep the values that I have set for myself, especially while facing temptations about drinking.' - Student, Broward County
  • 'I learned about the different ways to resist peer pressure when it comes to drinking alcohol.' - Student, Miami-Dade County

AlcoholEdu® for High School is a 90-minute, interactive course that engages students with science-based alcohol education and interactive exercises, providing an individualized experience that changes perceptions, motivates behavior change, and supports healthier decisions regarding alcohol. The digital program, developed by leading social impact education innovator EVERFI, is proven to reduce negative consequences associated with underage drinking. Topics covered include, peer pressure, effects of alcohol on the brain and body, bystander behavior, and goal-setting. Through pre- and post-course assessments and surveys, students are measured on knowledge gains as well as shifts in behavior, attitudes, and habits around alcohol safety. Those assessment and survey results are compared against EVERFI's national survey population of more than 106,000 students from the 2018-19 school year.

Teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators in Miami-Dade and Broward counties who are interested in implementing this program for the 2019-20 school year should contact EVERFI Implementation Manager, Laura Adriansen at [email protected].
