Hoeven Votes to Hold Secretary Mayorkas Accountable for Failure to Uphold the Law, Secure the Border

WASHINGTON - Senator John Hoeven issued the following statement after voting to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable for failing to uphold the law and secure the border. Hoeven has been making the case for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty by holding a trial to consider the impeachment articles, however Senate Democrats instead blocked efforts to hold a trial and voted to dismiss the articles of impeachment.

"Secretary Mayorkas needs to be held responsible for failing to uphold the law and secure the border. Under oath, he has repeatedly refused to admit that there is a crisis at our southern border and instead sought to mislead Congress regarding the Biden administration's policies, while obfuscating his responsibility to uphold our immigration laws and ensure our borders are secure," said Hoeven. "The record increase of illegal crossings at the southern border poses a threat to U.S. national security, and is directly linked to his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law, and resulting breach of public trust. We must hold him accountable."

Hoeven, along with 42 other senators, made the case for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty by holding a trial to consider the impeachment articles. In a letter to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the senators outline the crisis at the border and the constitutional duty of the Senate to hold a trial.
