International trade in goods in February 2022: imports +21.1%, exports +14.7%

Vienna,2022-05-06 - The value of imports of goods was at €15.81 bn in February 2022, an increase of 21.1% compared to February 2021, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. At the same time, exports of goods rose by 14.7% to €14.61 bn. The balance of trade thus showed a deficit of €1.21 bn.

"In February 2022, the value of Austrian imports increased by a whopping 21.1%, while exports rose by 14.7% year-on-year. The development was driven, among other things, by higher energy prices, which were mainly responsible for strong increases in the value of imports of fuels and energy with +149.2%," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

The four most important product groups for Austrian international trade in goods in both trade flows are machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, chemicals and related products and miscellaneous manufactured articles. Aggregated they showed an export growth of 11.7% to €12.11 bn. The highest absolute growth in exports within this group was recorded with manufactured goods (+28.2%), followed by chemicals and related products (+18.0%). The aggregated imports of these four most important product groups rose by 14.6% to €11.87 bn.
