Get your skates on and have your say on Junction Street Plaza

City of Parramatta is working to transform underutilised space under one of Sydney's major motorways into an urban living room for local youth and wants the community to have its say on the concept design.

Situated in Granville, Junction Street Plaza is the first pilot project under the M4 Motorway, with Council seeking more opportunities to convert 5,800 square metres of land into green space for recreation along the corridor.

Draft designs for the pilot Junction Street Plaza site are now on public exhibition and include spaces for parkour, street skating, and open areas with markings for a variety of ball games.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said Junction Street Plaza promised to be a unique urban space for the City's youth.

"We're proud of the work we're doing to upgrade our City's playgrounds, but this is something quite different," Cr Esber said.

"Every piece of this space has been carefully planned to create a place our youth can call their own.

"This project shows how Council is thinking creatively about public space and looking to provide more recreation facilities for our growing community. Just like similar projects in major cities around the world, Junction Street Plaza will turn this area into a unique fun zone for teens."

The concept design includes structures with skateable edges, a beginner and advanced parkour areas, multi-purpose court and a table tennis area with spectator seating.

Junction Street Plaza is a $1.2 million project created and funded in conjunction with the NSW Government through its 2021/22 Places to Play Program.

The project is expected to be completed by mid to late 2024 and to have your say on the concept design, visit the Participate Parramatta website before Monday 4 December 2023.
