'Tribute in Lights' will shine on evening of Sept. 11

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners is proud to announce a "Tribute in Lights" that will honor the lives lost and the heroism shown by rescue team members who responded to the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

"The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners began the 'Tribute in Lights' in 2020 and we believe it is incredibly important to continue this tradition as we once again observe this dark day in our nation's history," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "Monmouth County will never forget the 147 men and women who called our County home and lost their lives on 9/11."

The lights will be illuminated from sunset to 11 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2023, rain or shine. The lights will be visible from Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook.

"The Board of Commissioners invites everyone to come to Mount Mitchill and view the lights to remember those we lost on Sept. 11, 2001," said Commissioner Ross F. Licitra, liaison to the Monmouth County Park System. "We made a promise to 'Never Forget' those who were lost that day and we will proudly shine these lights as a symbol of that promise.'"

At 266 feet, the Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands sits on the highest natural elevation on the Atlantic seaboard (excluding islands) from Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula, providing beautiful views of Sandy Hook, Sandy Hook Bay, Raritan Bay and the New York skyline. The 12-acre site is home to Monmouth County's 9/11 Memorial.

In 2002, the Monmouth County 9/11 Committee formed and began making plans for a fitting tribute to the victims, heroes and events of Sept. 11, 2001. The group's first responsibility was to select a memorial to fit into Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook. The 9/11 Committee launched a major fundraising effort to finance the memorial and by midsummer 2005 the group exceeded its goal by raising $296,000. Continued donations will support the upkeep and maintenance of the memorial.
