PM RABUKA COMMENDS BIOSECURITY EFFORTS, CALLS FOR MORE SUPPORT FOR FARMERS AND EXPORTERS IN OPENING REGIONAL WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN BIOSECURITY MEASURES-(08-04-2024)

Representatives from 15 Pacific countries are presently attending a week-long regional workshop in Nadi to undertake an emergency response simulation exercise to enhance biosecurity vigilance.
The workshop titled, Early Warning Systems, Emergency Response Planning and Field Simulation Exercises, was opened by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabukathis morning.
While delivering the keynote address, PM Rabuka emphasized the proactive role of biosecurity in protecting the nation, agriculture sector, our health and economy ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems, and communities in an interconnected world.
"This important workshop is testament to our commitment to safeguard the agricultural heritage and biodiversity of Fiji and neighbouring Pacific Islands," he said.
"This exercise presents the opportunity to test our systems, identify weaknesses, and strengthen our capacities to respond to incursions swiftly and effectively.
"It underscores our commitment to implement proactive, rather than reactive, measures in safeguarding our agriculture, environment, and economy."
The Prime Minister also highlighted the workshop's role in facilitating knowledge-sharing, leveraging advanced science, and promoting regional and international partnerships.
Global concerns over weak biosecurity measures were pointed out by Prime Minister Rabuka, who cited estimates placing the annual cost of invasive species at nearly $1.4 trillion, which is equivalent to 5% of global GDP.
The Prime Minister also commended BAF and its Australian counterpart DAFF for their collaboration in the grant of access for fresh chilli from Fiji to Australia.
He commended this achievement which increases market opportunities for Fiji-grown produce.
"It is the policy of the People's Coalition Government to enhance biosecurity support for our farmers and exporters in the facilitation of international trade in agriculture," said the Prime Minister.
"Biosecurity is our shared responsibility and collective shield, securing a prosperous and resilient future for all. Together, we uphold this commitment for the well-being of our nation and beyond."
The regional workshop, organized by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, is made possible through funding from the European Union's SAFE project and implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Australian Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forests (DAFF).
