Professor of Psychiatry Domenico Giacco on 'Mental illness in women and girls driven by violence and abuse, doctors warn'

Professor of Psychiatry Domenico Giacco, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, said: "Among the possible long-term negative impacts of domestic abuse and trauma there are social isolation and loneliness, which are mentioned as overlapping contributors in this survey. Research shows that loneliness can be both a precursor and a consequence of mental health conditions. When both mental health difficulties and loneliness are present, they can amplify each other's effects. This can lead to enduring psychological distress and to negative impacts also on physical health. It is important to offer mental health support that also helps people with their social lives."
