Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran participates in unveiling of Losoya House mural and prepares for next steps in the Alamo Plan

SAN ANTONIO (April 20, 2021) - Friday, Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran attended and helped unveil a part of her ancestry - the Losoya House Exhibit. This new exhibit will give visitors the opportunity to better visualize the Losoya House and parts of the Battle of 1836 with a chance to see a full-sized replica of an Alamo cannon. This event marked a significant milestone for the Alamo Plan.
'Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the new exhibits. There are many important stories to be told at this sacred site. This is more than the location of a pivotal battle that became a transcendent point in history. The hallowed ground and underneath it, tells so many stories of this community, State and The Americas. The story is personal for me - the Alamo represents a place of family. This is where my story is rooted, and ancestral line with Jose Toribio Losoya was established. Losoya was born at the Alamo and gave his life defending the only home he knew.'
On April 15, 2021, San Antonio's City Council approved a new lease agreement that will incorporate the latest design concepts for the Alamo Plan. The approved agreement, guided by the Vision and Guiding Principles, was a critical step to moving the Alamo Plan forward and is a pivotal moment for the City of San Antonio and State of Texas. The Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee will now begin reviewing the interpretative plan and content development in May 2021. This will include discussions of Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Texas Revolution and Battle of 1836 and the post-battle era. The committee will also have a meeting to discuss the traditions and ceremonies in the Plaza, and they will receive an update on the archival investigation. Later this year, they will review the design of Alamo Plaza. The City expects to begin construction in early 2022.
'The Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee's goal is to tell the whole story of the Alamo while elevating a world class experience for both visitors and residents. The committee ensures the Plaza will be kept open for people to maintain connectivity of the site and allow a sense of arrival. In addition, this expansion of the cultural landscape of the Alamo will connect to other historic sites throughout San Antonio, which will create a truly extraordinary experience.'
Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran was appointed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg to step in the role as Tri Chair of the Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee and the Alamo Management Committee on March 1, 2021 and since has helped guide the reset of the process, rebuild relationships with the Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee and set out a course of action with the other Tri Chairs; Aaronetta Pierce and Sue Ann Pemberton. Beginning June 1, 2021, a portion of Alamo Street between Crockett Street and Houston Street will be closed to begin enhanced programming of Alamo Plaza.
