Upgrades will deliver a healthy future at Kent Street Weir

The City of Canning's Kent Street Weir will see enhancements to the Precinct with work commencing on the Wetland Buffer expansion and upgrades to dog exercise area this month.

Working with Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the City will create a vital extension of the Wilson Wetland Buffer.

The Wetland Buffer is needed to reduce the influx of pollutants and disturbance to the wetland, aiming to improve and support the overall biodiversity, and long-term health of the area.

The project will also include enhancements to the dog exercise area featuring shelters, seating, digging sand pit, secure fencing, drinking water fountain and lighting, which will improve the recreational experience for both the dogs and their owners.

During construction, the current dog exercise area will be temporarily relocated, adjacent to the current area, and downsized to allow for the enhancements. Once complete the dog exercise area will be 5,500m2.

Mayor Patrick Hall said enhancements to Kent Street Weir will make the Precinct a more inclusive and vibrant community asset.

"The City of Canning is dedicated to preserving the biodiversity and natural beauty of our local wetlands, and this is the vital part of the project.

"Enhancing and improving our recreational opportunities for our residents is also important.

"The improvements to the dog exercise will encourage more of the community to come together and to use the facility, which is extremely positive," said Mayor Hall.

These upgrades are part of a comprehensive plan that integrates with the broader vision for the park, including the future construction of an all-abilities play space.

Recent investments in the park's infrastructure, such as upgrading the sewer system, installing a pump track, and enhancing recreational facilities, reflect the city's commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.
