Public Invited to Informational Meeting Regarding the Mechanical and Electrical Rehabilitation of the Saugatuck Railroad Bridge in Westport

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a virtual public information meeting concerning the mechanical and electrical rehabilitation of the Saugatuck Railroad Bridge carrying Metro North Railroad over the Saugatuck River in Westport on April 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.

The virtual public information meeting is being held to provide the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project. The meeting will take place on Zoom, and registration is required. A question and answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation, which will be recorded. For instructions on accessing the meeting and ways to provide comments and ask questions, please visit https://portal.ct.gov/DOTWestport301-177.

"To ensure operational reliability, this project will address mechanical and electrical deficiencies of the existing movable bridge for safer rail travel," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Hareshkumar Dholakia. "We encourage the public to attend this meeting to learn about the project."

The purpose of the project is to rehabilitate the mechanical and electrical systems of Bridge No. 08032R, which carries Metro North Railroad over the Saugatuck River. The rehabilitation will refurbish and partially replace mechanical systems and fully replace electrical systems. Off season deviations to the bridge opening schedule will be necessary, as the bridge will not be able to open while these systems are under construction.

Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are not anticipated.

Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2025 based on the availability of funding and approval of permits. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 100% state funds.
