City of Troy Takes Steps to Rehome Pets to Safe, Loving Homes

CITY OF TROY TAKES STEPS TO REHOME PETS TO SAFE, LOVING HOMES

TROY, NY (March 12) - The City of Troy makes strides in its quest for assistance from local non-profits, rescues and shelters to address the growing animal shelter capacity crisis.

"We have prided ourselves on our transparency with the people of Troy," said Mayor Mantello. "As a community, we need to be able to support one another which is why have committed to solve this issue."

At the start of the year, the City of Troy was informed that its contracted shelter, the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, was unable to accept any dogs from the City because it had reached its capacity of 80 dogs. The shelter further advised that it expects to remain at capacity for the foreseeable future. To date, Troy has only been able to house one dog at the facility since the first of this year.

"Unfortunately, the ravages of inflation are causing more and more pets to be abandoned or given up for adoption," Mayor Mantello said. "This is not just a Troy issue; it is impacting much of the Capitol Region. We are working closely with other impacted municipalities to identify long-term solutions."

With the contract shelter being at capacity for so long, the City of Troy has had to find temporary housing solutions. A local veterinary hospital has generously offered their space to house multiple strays. While extremely helpful, it is only a temporary solution for a small part of the larger problem.

"Finding a temporary housing solution for these dogs is just part one," Mayor Mantello continued. "Our next issue is finding a third party that would be willing to facilitate a proper adoption process. We know that people want to adopt these dogs, but we want to make sure that they go to a safe, loving home."

The mayor's office is actively searching for a permanent solution. If you are part of a local non-profit, rescue or shelter willing to assist in the facilitation of adoptions or provide temporary shelter, please reach out to the City of Troy's Clerk's office at [email protected].
