University Community Mourns Passing of Alta Burns, Emeritus Faculty

JONESBORO - The university community extends sympathy to the family, friends and former colleagues of Alta Burns, who died Thursday. Burns retired from Arkansas State University and was named emeritus assistant professor of physical education in 1996.

Burns served on the A-State faculty two times, 1961-64 and 1967-96, for a total of 32 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree in physical education at A-State, and her Master of Arts degree at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, also in physical education with an emphasis in dance.

Her teaching specialty was in dance technique, and she often conducted workshops and demonstrations in dance, exercise and weight control. She was adviser to the Dance Club.

Among her many awards, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreations and Dance (AHPERD) Southern District recognized Burns in 1999 with its Honor Award for professional achievements. She also filled leadership roles in Altrusa International and Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Her funeral service is at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Emerson Funeral Home. The complete obituary is online.
